By transforming the familiarity of maps into new forms and shapes, Kate evokes a new sense of place. The information of maps and knowledge contained within, bring a sense of foreignness and curiousness as she manipulates old material into new information. Using a variety of media allows her to create complex textures and layers with canvas, paper, paint, thread and ink. These multi-layered, mixed media paintings address familiar themes of place and identity. By representing rivers, waterways, and coastlines she creates a relationship between land, tributaries, and confluences that echo the rhythm and diversity of the water’s paths and the stories of human interaction.
